The phrase "common words" in early literacy refers to familiar and frequently used words. These are the words that children encounter regularly in their immediate environment, everyday conversations, and shared reading experiences. Their familiarity helps children build a solid foundation for reading and comprehension. Common words often include high-frequency sight words, which are essential for developing fluency in reading, enabling children to read smoothly and with greater comprehension.

Choosing words that are familiar to young learners supports their learning processes, as it allows them to confidently recognize and utilize these words in various contexts. Familiarity helps to reinforce their understanding and invites them to engage with texts more fully, ultimately fostering a greater love for reading and enhancing their vocabulary development. This focus on common and frequently used words aligns with early literacy goals, emphasizing the importance of accessible language in supporting children's reading journeys.
